My Career Journey
In 2015 I graduated from Utah State University with my BA in social work. I have a whole soap box about universities that I won’t go into here, you can read about that HERE. But basically I chose social work because the only thing I felt like I was good at was listening to people and their problems. Somewhere during the course of my schooling I found out that I couldn’t really do counseling or therapy like I wanted without having a master’s degree. While I wanted to get more schooling, I could barely afford a BA let alone another degree. The plan they suggest sometimes is to work in the field while going to school for a masters. So I tried jobs in the social work field. I worked as an aid at a behavioral health clinic which was a very intense glorified babysitting job that paid $10 an hour. How was I supposed to pay off my student loans and get a masters degree at $10 an hour? I lasted only a few weeks at that job. After a few jobs not in my field, I got a job at an eating disorder facility for teenage girls, again as a glorified babysitter getting paid maybe $12 an hour. I lasted a few months at that job when some health concerns came up and I was no longer able to eat what they were feeding the girls there (which was a huge part of the job). I then got a job as an advisor at Bridgerland Technical College which I loved. It was amazing to get to tell potential students of the school my experience of “wasting” a lot of money at a university when I clearly wasn’t ready and when the jobs my degree qualified me for were incredibly frustrating and paid next to nothing. It was also frustrating that I was doing a counseling job, like I wanted to begin with, but that my degree did not help me get and wasn’t needed for the position and didn’t help my pay at all. I could have gotten the job I wanted originally without the thousands of dollars in student loan debt. After a few years of that, I got a job working for a nonprofit when we moved to Oregon. It’s been great getting to assist them in communications and spreading their message on social media. But it still doesn’t allow me to help people in the way I want to, in a real way, a way that actually affects their day to day life. My career journey and my spiritual journey overlaps and I talk about my spiritual journey HERE but basically I felt called to hypnotherapy after it seemed to fall in my lap after years of pursuing other things. I had listened to hypnosis recordings once in a while and found them to be helpful but a masterclass gave me more information and studies showing how effective it can be for creating positive lasting change. Grace Smith, the founder of the Grace Method which I am learning, had one session of hypnotherapy and quit smoking in that one session after many years participating in that habit. If there was ever a quicker way to get results, this seems to be it and the stories of what people have been able to accomplish with hypnotherapy speak for themselves.
It has been incredible to hear what my clients have said about their experiences with Hypnotherapy and how it has changed their lives for the better. You can read about them here. That is what makes it all worth it. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me and how my work will evolve and change as I do. I invite you to stick around as we support each other on our individual journeys.
